The California-to-Texas Migration Boom – What’s Driving It?

In recent years, a growing number of Californians have been packing their bags and heading to Texas. The migration trend has been steadily increasing, but the most recent data shows a staggering 36% surge in the number of California residents relocating to the Lone Star State. This shift is more than just a coincidence—it represents a major demographic transformation fueled by economic factors, affordability, and lifestyle preferences.

Why Are Californians Moving to Texas?

According to a 2018 study by Texas Realtors, more than 86,000 Californians made the move to Texas that year alone. This migration was part of a broader pattern that saw Texas receive a total of 563,945 new residents—the second-largest inbound migration of any state, trailing only Florida. While Florida’s growth was largely driven by retiring baby boomers, Texas’s appeal lies in its business-friendly environment, job opportunities, and lower cost of living.

The trend has been in motion for several years, with over half a million people choosing Texas as their new home for six consecutive years. As Cindi Bulla, 2020 chairperson of Texas Realtors, stated in the report:

"Texas continues to attract new residents thanks to its economic stability, affordable housing, and high quality of life. It’s no surprise that the state has become a top destination for people looking for new opportunities."

Where Are These New Texans Coming From?

While California led the pack, many other states also contributed to Texas’s rapid population growth. The majority of new arrivals came from:

  • Florida – 37,262
  • Louisiana – 29,108
  • Oklahoma – 24,590
  • New York – 21,509

  • On a city level, the largest numbers of new Texans migrated from Los Angeles-Long Beach-Anaheim, New York-Newark-Jersey City, and Chicago-Naperville-Elgin.

    Where Are They Moving To?

The Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area saw the highest influx of new residents, with 200,966 out-of-state arrivals, followed closely by Houston with 176,110. Within Texas, Harris County was the most mobile, with a net migration of 80,572 people.

Economic and Lifestyle Advantages of Texas

Texas has emerged as a preferred destination for individuals and businesses alike, offering a combination of:

  • Lower cost of living – The median home price in Texas is significantly lower than in California, allowing families to afford larger homes with more land.
  • No state income tax – Unlike California’s high state income taxes, Texas residents keep more of their earnings.
  • Booming job market – Texas cities, particularly Dallas-Fort Worth, have become major employment hubs. In 2019, North Texas added over 120,000 new jobs, leading the nation in job growth.
  • Business-friendly policies – Companies are relocating to Texas due to lower corporate taxes and fewer regulations, bringing job opportunities with them.
  • The Future of Texas Migration

With more major companies like Tesla, Oracle, and Hewlett Packard Enterprise moving their headquarters to Texas, the migration trend is expected to continue accelerating. Texas’s ability to maintain its affordability and economic strength will determine whether it remains the top destination for Americans seeking new opportunities.
